Few documents through American history have withstood the test of time and have become statement pieces for our society. In this group, the Declaration of Independence by Thomas Jefferson and Common Sense by Thomas Paine both hold high positions. Thomas Paine wrote â€Å"The Crisis†, which was a chapter in his pamphlet Common Sense, which advocated that the thirteen original colonies gain independence from Great Britain. The Declaration of Independence was a government document written in 1776 that proclaims America a state of democracy not connected to Britain. Although they share a general topic, both feature a wide range of similarities and differences to each other. According to an article published about the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson and four others were chosen â€Å"to draft a formal statement justifying the break with Great Britain† (history.com). This formal statement was known as the Declaration of Independence after Jefferson wrote the first draft and the others edited it. On the other hand, the goal of â€Å"The Crisis† was to encourage the colonists to fight in the ongoing Revolutionary war and provide reasons for the war. Both papers completed their author’s purpose as the Declaration of Independence was signed and accepted by all thirteen colonies, concluding that they were separate from Great Britain and George Washington ordered â€Å"The Crisis† to be read to troops and provide them with encouragement. Thus, both documents were written compelling enough to convince people to support them, which was the joined goal of the two. One of the differences between the â€Å"The Crisis† and the Declaration of Independence was their authors.
